Interested in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), but unsure how to gain practical experience? Start by mapping your own neighbourhood.

Using QGIS, a free, open-source mapping application, students can create digital maps, analyse geographical information and explore real-world problems without purchasing expensive software.

Your First Project: Map Neighbourhood Facilities

Project objective: Create a digital map showing schools, hospitals, parks and roads in your locality. Then explore a simple question: Which areas appear to have easier access to essential facilities?

How to complete the project

Step

What to do

1. Install QGIS

Download the free software from the official website.

2. Select Your Area

Choose your neighbourhood, town or a small section of your city.

3. Collect Map Data

Obtain suitable publicly available roads, boundaries and facility-location data.

4. Create Map Layers

Display schools, hospitals, parks and roads using different symbols.

5. Analyse Accessibility

Use distance measurements or buffer tools to explore facility coverage.

6. Export Your Map

Add a legend, scale bar and title, then export a PDF or image.

These tasks use standard QGIS capabilities covered in its official training documentation.

What will you learn?

  • Digital mapping and geographical data visualisation.

  • Working with vector layers and attribute tables.

  • Basic spatial analysis and distance measurement.

  • Interpreting geographical patterns.

  • Presenting findings through a professional map.

Your final portfolio project

One digital neighbourhood map, a short project report and three observations explaining what your analysis revealed.

Important: Straight-line distances are not the same as road travel distances. A basic buffer map provides an initial accessibility estimate, not a complete accessibility assessment.

How can this help your career?

A completed GIS project demonstrates practical initiative and introduces skills relevant to GIS analysis, urban planning, environmental science, disaster management and geospatial data analysis.

It can also help you discover whether you enjoy working with maps, analysing data and solving location-based problems.

Remember: Your first project does not need to be complicated. It needs to be accurate, clearly explained and completed.
